Joint Committee on Mobility of Blind and Partially Sighted People

What's new

Some local authorities in the United Kingdom are implementing shared surface schemes in High Streets and town centres and removing the separation between vehicles and pedestrians, mainly through the removal of the traditional kerb between the pavement and carriageway. These schemes are putting the safety of blind and partially sighted people, and other vulnerable groups, at serious risk.

Research has been carried out among blind and partially-sighted people, and other disabled people, to find out more about their concerns when using shared surfaces in town centres. To access the findings of this research, visit the shared surfaces area on the main Guide Dogs website.
